10 Things I Hate About You (and your taste in film).

What are the things that you hate about your friends and family in regard to their taste in movies?

Do you have friends that you just can't go to the movies with?

I have a friend that tries his hardest to love every movie he sees... and he sees every movie made. That irks me. He always makes me feel like a real jerk for not liking movies that other people had the good sense not to spend money on.
He just glares at me after I've been ranting for 10 minutes and says "I liked it". Errrr! so annoying...

My mom confuses "artsy" with "deep" sometimes... which can be problematic when she's recommending something. I almost gave up on her opinions completely when I saw Adaptation under here recommendation.

Another friend, I had to stop seeing movies with altogether - he is just really into cheese... one of his favorite movies is Hellbent... and he's convinced that we like the same movies so he keeps calling me on Friday nights and I just don't pick up the phone. For some reason "hated it" translates to "OMG - that was the best movie ever" in his mind. But it's always some really grainy, counter-culture, film school rejected, unfunny waste of celluloid and never something that improves my weekend.

Or do you find that your friends and family like the same stuff as you?

If so, ur lucky because I have to use "Instant Viewing" to see some stuff by myself because I waste too much time seeing all the crap my friends want to see...

I always get 3 invites to see the crap-movie-of-the-week but when I mention the Oscar winner, the "thinking person's movie" or the sociopolitical documentary as possibilities, everybody shrugs and says they are busy.

What's up with that?

Wow. 93% similar as a NF rating? I have two NF friends (I don't know them outside of NF) in the mid 80's and quite a few in the 70's and 60's but never heard of that high. You must be twins almost.

93% in netflix. I think we both expected it to change as we rated more movies, but it has remained in the 90's. I guess you'd say we're a lot alike in some ways, but also very different in others. Actually, he is on here.

My friends all like "Comedy"... which i can't stand. Now don't get me wrong i like funny movies...but not new ones. Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, and Owen Wilson drive me nuts...all those kind of movies do. I like Monty Python and other older comedies. I do have one friend that loves horror and gore just as much as i do. But i can't get him into foreign and independent.

I also love drama and my friends don't like 2hr long movies that make you think. My boyfriend will watch some of my movies (though i don't think he likes them) but at least he tries lol. Also my friends don't get into movies that much in general...they could see one (a crappy one) a year and be ok...i would go nuts.

And my friends usually won't watch a movie that was made before 1985...so i can forget trying to get them to watch b&w and silent movies. And some of the bast horror movies are exactly that.

You should look at my lists over at NF sounds like we have a lot in common.

My dad and I both like scary movies, but our criteria for what makes a good one are completely contrary.

Me, I like the slow build-up, the sustained tension, the gradual creep-out that lingers. The Asian ghost stories are my favorite, because they are really good at this.

He likes to see the big scary monster right in your face, and a lot of it. He saw Cloverfield recently and said he liked it, but that he fast forwarded through the party scene at the beginning. Now that offends me as someone who appreciates the art of film but also, I think it lessens the impact of the moment when you finally do see whatever it is that is wreaking terror on the characters, if you just jump right to that point. He has no appreciation for subtlety or storytelling craft. I'm sure he would find most of my favorite scary movies boring just because they don't hit you in the head with a hammer.

I enjoy watching movies with my friends that I wouldn't have watched otherwise. Over the past few years my taste in movies has really broadened and it's mostly because of this. So I have no problem watching movies with people with wildly different tastes - chances are, I may actually really enjoy their movie choices, too...

However, I don't like everything. I had one friend who made me watch David Lynch, David Cronenburg, Jim Jurmasch, and Wim Wenders movies with her ALL THE TIME. I couldn't stand how painfully bored they all made me. Needless to say, I no longer watch movies with this person. These days, I have an "Eraserhead Test" - if you like Eraserhead, then I won't be coming over to your house to watch a movie with you. EVER.

is this friend of yours single? heh.

Yeah, she's single - Every guy she dates eventually dies of boredom from watching movies with her...

That sentence almost made my head explode like the scene in Cronenburg's Scanners.

...and that's why i want...nay, NEED to know if this woman is single!

btw, it's cronenberg, not cronenburg.

I thought so, but I'm not so good with my spelling so I just follow the lead...

Okay, call me ignorant, but your going to have to elaborate on the exploding head joke... I have never even heard of Jim Jurmasch or Wim Wenders or almost any of their movies. Lynch and Cronenberg are two of my favorite directors...

Educate me.
