10 Things I Hate About You (and your taste in film).

What are the things that you hate about your friends and family in regard to their taste in movies?

Do you have friends that you just can't go to the movies with?

I have a friend that tries his hardest to love every movie he sees... and he sees every movie made. That irks me. He always makes me feel like a real jerk for not liking movies that other people had the good sense not to spend money on.
He just glares at me after I've been ranting for 10 minutes and says "I liked it". Errrr! so annoying...

My mom confuses "artsy" with "deep" sometimes... which can be problematic when she's recommending something. I almost gave up on her opinions completely when I saw Adaptation under here recommendation.

Another friend, I had to stop seeing movies with altogether - he is just really into cheese... one of his favorite movies is Hellbent... and he's convinced that we like the same movies so he keeps calling me on Friday nights and I just don't pick up the phone. For some reason "hated it" translates to "OMG - that was the best movie ever" in his mind. But it's always some really grainy, counter-culture, film school rejected, unfunny waste of celluloid and never something that improves my weekend.

Or do you find that your friends and family like the same stuff as you?

If so, ur lucky because I have to use "Instant Viewing" to see some stuff by myself because I waste too much time seeing all the crap my friends want to see...

I always get 3 invites to see the crap-movie-of-the-week but when I mention the Oscar winner, the "thinking person's movie" or the sociopolitical documentary as possibilities, everybody shrugs and says they are busy.

What's up with that?

In Scanners the bad guy is telekinetic, and he makes a guy's head explode.

In Scanners the bad guy is telekinetic, and he makes a guy's head explode.

Yeah, I... ahem... I get that part of it

I guess I am asking about the connection between the 4 directors and the overall general opinion about their movies that might make a film lovers head figuratively explode if he were subjected to them.

lol

I've finally reached my goal of being socially akward and misunderstood even in writing.

No hard feelings.

Clock, in certain circles these four directors are considered the masters of their art.

Cronenberg is one of my all time favorite directors, and while I don't always "get" Lynch I love the visuals he brings to the screen. Jim Jarmusch is an aquirred taste but he often works with Tom Waits, I think he is the bees knees and Jarmush's film with Forrest Whitaker Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai is one of the most beautiful gangsta films I've ever seen. Wim Wenders has done a lot of stuff, but his most memorable to me was Until the End of the World which is not available at Netflix. Basically Odeipussy is saying that these four directors who are considered masters of their art aren't his cup of tea. That hurts my head and thus leading to the explosions.

LOL... wow, you are not even trying to sound like those directors might have anything going on...

I kind of agree... at least as far as recent David Lynch movies are concerned... his "compelling factor" just kind of fizzled...

The others, I'm not sure about... what are the best movies by each of them?

(or I guess what your friend would say are the best)

I might have rated them.

cronenberg-videodrome, the brood, shivers or rabid if you like the older horror stuff. he's kinda gotten away from starting with dead ringers, naked lunch, existenz, spider, etc. i like them all though.

Jarmusch-i've only seen mystery train, which i liked a lot. got a few others in my queue.

haven't seen any wim wenders, but he did paris, texas didn't he? i have that in queue as well.

i'd have to disagree on david lynch. i think all his films are brilliant in their own way.

Thanks for the info folks... now I'll have to add some Wenders and Jarmusch to my queue.

I've seen almost all of Lynch's stuff, particularly fan favorites.
I've seen almost all of Cronenberg's stuff except for Shivers and Rabid which seem to be trapped ambiguously in Limbo (perhaps like the John Sayles movie, which I enjoyed)

Rabid is awesome. Arm pit vampires and Marilyn Chambers Porn Star!

Thanks for the info - I'll put a couple in the old queue...

Great thing about NFlix - you can waste movies in order to expiriment cuz you don't pay for them individually.

Even better when they are on Instant.

I liked "Ghost Dog" by Jim Jarmusch. Story of an AA samurai who lives a lonely life and then revenges the death of a friend at the hands of a local, aging group of mafia hit men. Good music too.

Great soundtrack and awesome cartoons.

I got to see the RZA spin some records as the live soundtrack to some vintage cartoons at an outdoor ampitheatre once -- you know he was reliving his work with Jarmusch on Ghost Dog when he decided to put that show together.
