Which futuristic movie are you most afraid of coming true?

There are so many great sci fi and horror movies with everything from doomsday viruses to global nuclear warfare. Some are so obviously outlandish that they just make for a great ride, but some seem almost too easy to see happening. I don't worry about zombies because I feel that I'm prepared and know what to do in the event of a zombie attack, but I'm terrified by the politics gone wrong scenarios. For me, the most realistic and terrifying have got to be

The Handmaid's Tale
Fahrenheit 451

What about you? What movie do you watch and walk away thinking, holy cow that could happen!

yeah, mine used to be "a clockwork orange" but i think nowadays i have to agree with you on "idiocracy"

for me too, it's the film, Idiocracy w/luke wilson. i thought it would be funnier but parts of it sadly, already ring true. we are so doomed.

cube. while the existence of 'the cube' may not be realistic, the idea of the abductions/disappearances of random people is. disturbing.

similar to house of 9 (and the Saw movies). while it's not as good as Cube, the ending to house of 9 stuck with me.

If the movie version of Cormac McCarthy's novel, "The Road", is anything like the devastating book then this will be my choice...currently filming with Viggo Mortenson playing the lead role.

Wow! I was thinking of this book as I read thru the posts. Frightening book, for sure. I love Viggo, it may have to be a "must see" for me.

A few of the Phillip K Dick adapted movies would be scary futures depending on where your place was in society.

Also, a few King/Bachman movies or books.

The Mist (loved this movie)

The Running Man & The Long Walk (The Long Walk is not a movie, but both of these books are very bleak and channel the future of reality TV)

Independence Day or any of the virus outbreaks like Invasion, Resident Evil, I Am Legend and many more.... I think of the landscape not the creatures as to the reality behind what could be real

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Easy one for me. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers -- not the version with Kevin McCarthy, but the re-make with Donald Sutherland.

At least the original left you with a sense of fight and urgency. The re-make almost said, "Just give up," and depressed the living shit outa me.

Fahrenheit 451 and The Handmaid's Tale are in the mix, but their bleak climaxes still held out a glimmer of hope.

Children of Men is a good call, and similar in vein is The Day After with Jason Robards. Somewhat dated with some of it, still worth a watch, the SF Channel was showing it there for a while. Pretty bleak.

oh, another film that civilization may end up like is -> Mad Max. in some towns in rural areas, the meth heads already act like it; stealing gas, being cruel for no good rational reason, and what not. charming lot they are.
