I Did Not Like the "Pirates of the Caribbean" Trilogy

I wonder if I was the only person who didn't like it. It seems like all my friends loved it and most anyone I come across. I didn't like it at all. I can see why the masses like it but I found it lacking substance. I suppose I just didn't like how the movie was shot. I probably just have a beef with the editor. Because the performances of the cast were decent but I felt smothered by the editing. The shots were way to short and tight. It'd probably have been better shot in anamorphic. I felt smothered by the tight editing of the battle sequences. I sat waiting for a wide shot and none came. I was inundated by close ups and fast cuts. I felt smothered. I felt like I was being bombarded by computer generated effects. Effects that overshadowed good performances and a decent plot.

I'm beginning to believe movies are only made today for kids and the MTV generation. Sure I'm only twenty eight but I didn't watch TV growing up. I probably am old fashion. I just like a slow paced film, with a decent plot, adequate character development, beautiful cinematography, limited computer generated effects, and few cuts. I like to see the actors and the characters they portray unfold the story for me. I'm probably asking way to much. Heck this is 2008, we're long past making movies with meaning and a moral message to be gleaned. I probably watched way to many Tennessee Williams film adaptations. I probably goto the community theatre to often. I just might be way behind on the times. But let me tell you, I know what inspires me. It's certainly not computer generated effects but it's performances.

I want to see more old school movies. Some of you might remember the movies I'm talking about. Those movies that dug deep into the personal lives of the characters portrayed in them. By the end of the movie you felt you knew them personally. Even action movies were paced slower. Take for instance one of my favorite movies, "Die Hard" it was very slow paced. There was action packed scenes but the there was pauses to give the audience breathing room. It just seems action movies today try to squeeze as many computer generated effects into one scene as possible.

I hope one day some new directors will bring back old styles. I wonder if it's possible to teach a new dog old tricks?

I found the first ok, hated the 2nd, never saw the 3rd.

I prefer Captain Blood to the lot of em.

It's a popcorn adventure flick. What did you expect?

There are plenty of old school dramatic movies, always have been and always will. Expecting a Disney adventure movie based on a theme park ride to be some kind of deep exploration of piracy is like expecting "Transformers" to be a deep discussion on the nature of artificial intelligence and the human place in the creation of the universe.

Personally I was *hoping* for adventure and action. Hey, I'm a zombie and anime guy, not Citizen Kane and Casablanca. What I saw in the second and third disappointed me. Don't get me wrong, if someone wants to watch it I'll pop the DVD in and sit with them (yes, I own all three), but they simply weren't up to speed with the first movie. Maybe that's to the credit of the first movie, and it's actually a complement that most people thought the others sucked.

The first one was boring so I had no desire to see the other two.

Well,

"...Black Pearl" (this would be the 1st film hereto referred) is the best of the trilogy,,, descent story setup, character intros and interesting/possible love triangle.... this is what led me to buy the second movie ticket?

"...Dead Man's Chest" the 2nd installment and ironically falls into second place. I might add stumbled and bumbled it's way down my rating almost as fast as that mill water wheel. Now, the love triangle becomes stupid, the characters somewhat predictable less we say substance-less and the jokes... well, un-pirate like. I was disappointed and lost interest in the story. Probably the only continued saving grace was the set designs, costumes, and graphics.

"...World's End" the last film and yes the eulogy of this trilogy. Ok, I swore I had enough, but it was premiere night in town, enjoyed an excellent dinner out, and swailed a few bottles of white wine with the Mrs. We just became caught up in the whoopla walking past the theater and broke down. It was inevitable. I drove the final stake through the heart of this "for profit only" embarrassment during the 'marriage vow scene aboard the deck of a ship swirling about a maelstrom , besieged by sword clanking, bowel gutting cut throats". Yes my friends, it was time for ole P of C to do what was right..... walk the plank maties!

Um yeah! What Chad said!!! No seriously this is a fairly decent analysis of the series and pretty much the way I saw it, however no matter how bad the movie is, I am always entertained, at least somewhat by Johnny Depp and his myriad of expressions on his face!

Oh yeah, I couldn't stop laughing at that scene for, like, a whole minute! Forget the wedding cake! Cut the wedding pirates instead.

The only reason I saw the first one was because of Johnny Depp. But, didn't care for it. But, because of Johnny Depp, I thought I would give the second one a try. I liked it less than the first. But, he was excellent in the role. I think special effects were way over used, and yes, the editing was too fast paced. I used to liked Johnny Depp's choice of different and unusual characters, but it looks like he's sold out lately for high paying, mass audience roles. But, I am looking forward to seeing him in "Sweeney Todd".

The first one to me was beyond boring that I almost fell asleep at the theatre. Never bothered with the others.

I liked them all. The first was new and fun. I thought the second was pretty funny and the third was less interesting but dark and I like dark. So yeah, I liked them all and I'd got see another. Johnny Depp made them all. If he wasn't in them I wouldn't have seen any.

I only have seen the first. It was OK but I don't give what all the massive ravings are about.
