It seems pretty straightforward to set up as many aliases as anyone would want on Ning and this community in particular. I was hoping to start a discussion about this and get people's thoughts on the subject.
Do you think many people are on here in different guises?
Do you think this practice is deceitful? Or not?
Why would people choose to adopt different aliases?
this is a stupid thread !!
isn't that what that told me about me about 3 threads i posted!! you called me stupid and my * using were stupid ! you seem to think your god here!! you really hurt my feelings!! and i noticed you have done it to others!!
we all cant be be a genius like you with spelling, thread ideas, etc!!
I'm honestly not trying to be antagonistic here, just curious because I don't fully understand your way of thinking. If you don't respect a member or their opinion, why would you care what they think of you?
Obviously, pihk is a friend of mine here. If he seriously insulted me, I'd be hurt because I genuinely like him. Conversely, if someone who I wasn't friends with here called me 'stupid' or 'idiot' or 'asshat' or whatever, it would roll off my back because I have no interest in their opinion of me.
I think racist/sexist/homophobic attacks are out of bounds, as are threats of physical harm. But simply calling someone playground names? I don't understand why it upsets some people so much.
Not really. I like a lot of people from various different backgrounds with various different personalities.
Here's the difference as I see it.
If someone is them self, confident, direct, in your face, honest, blunt… whatever, and they are consistent without being wishy washy or two faced. I just do not see them as a bad person. Maybe you don't like that, and that's OK, its your right. But it still doesn't make that person a bad person.
Then there is the other type of person. Someone who is not comfortable with them self, who hides behind multiple faces/personalities, who gains titillation by playing on both teams. The are all smiles and niceness in your face one minute, but talk smack about you behind your back the next.
I don't know about you, but… I'd rather have a confident person who knows who they are and is not afraid to be themselves at my back, even if I didn't like them. Then someone who gets their shits and giggles out of being a friend one minute, then stabbing you in the back the next.
I've been on the Internet a long time, since the days of dialing directly into other computers… Creating multiple personalities is not something new, and is often done by those with low self esteem or those who want to create controversy out of an inane desire to "be" who they are actually are, without having to deal with the consequences of their actions.
In my book, people that do "that" and are afraid of dealing with the consequences of their actions, are nothing more then cowards and "bullies" themselves.
Parrot, I have to be honest in that I never read the entire thread before I contributed my first comment. Seeing your post just now, I feel like I've missed a very important part of the discussion. I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but I'll take your post at face value.
First off, I won't defend anybody, even though I really like Pihkal. That issue is between you and him and should be resolved between you and him, but or what it's worth, there's a relaxed atmosphere on these forums that allows for a certain amount of ballbusting, and it's really a form of endearment. It can be a bit off-putting for newbies, but most folks here are pretty decent. For what its worth, and what I've seen, Pihk's a world class ballbuster and I can see how something like this might upset. On the flip, at least he sees your worthy of having your balls busted....if that makes any sense (does that read as stupidly as it was to type?). My suggestion, give as good as you get, and all in good fun. Infact, tapdance on his gonads! I'm sure he'd appreciate the attention. ;)
Personally, I've only had issues with two people, and I simply ignore their messages and comments. Why should someone who annoys me be allowed to spoil my time here? Although, if you seriously feel like you're being targeted by anyone regarding your spelling, just send them my way. I could use the proofreading....college educated and I cant' spell for shit, my grammar sucks too....
I have stayed quiet about all the juvenile shit that has been going on lately, mainly because I just don't care enough. Seriously, this forum is to have fun, chat about movies and things that interest us. Why go through all the effort to delete your profile just to start a new one? If you had such a bad experience, what makes you think that it will get better the second time around?
People seem to get their panties in a bunch about everything on here nowadays. All I want to say is relax and enjoy yourself. If that's not going to happen, find somewhere that you can. There are plenty of other great places to talk about movies.
Back to the original question (sorry I got a little off topic)...Yes, I think it is deceitful when people try to reinvent themselves, but then again more power to them. If they think a new avatar and name are going to hide who they are, they haven't learned a whole lot about this community. We will find out...we aren't as dumb as they would like to think we are. So good luck to them.
On another side note: Pihkal, I'm sorry that most of recent drama seems to blamed on you, being honest shouldn't be considered such a ghastly trait.
