It seems pretty straightforward to set up as many aliases as anyone would want on Ning and this community in particular. I was hoping to start a discussion about this and get people's thoughts on the subject.
Do you think many people are on here in different guises?
Do you think this practice is deceitful? Or not?
Why would people choose to adopt different aliases?
Here's the deal with me! I am the Headcheese! I have always been the Headcheese and will remain The Headcheese forever and frankly would take offense if anyone tries to come in here with headcheese 2 or any variation there of! I am the Headcheese all across the web and I don't ever want another identity and hence am willing to take the consequences of speaking my mind in any form as The Headcheese!! It's like Jack Nicholson in the Overlook. I have always been here and once in a while I need corrrrrecting but still, I am confident that most of the people that are my friends and that I speak with regularly are not identity shifters and so for those that are, I do think it's deceitful but it makes not one bit of difference as long as my friends aren't changing all the time.
Haha! You can't do it! It is impossible to be me. No one else can be me as I am a one of a kind! (oops, does that sound like my head is to big for my body?)
Nobody told me anything about circle jerking. Is that mandatory or just a suggestion? Cause I have to tell you if it's mandatory i'm not sure i'm cool with that.
P.S. I use to be in a band called the circle jerks too. Oh wait, there's already a band called the circle jerks. Ok, so i'm a lying
I've been posting on the message boards at IMDb for about six years now, and there are some people over there who have turned posting under multiple aliases into a goddamned art form. I personally have never had the time nor inclination to "be" someone else.
I don't know how many people here are in different guises...I haven't really been on the lookout for it. I'm pretty quick to recognize posting styles though, so they don't tend to stay on the down-low for too long.
I think the deceit factor ultimately depends on the intent of creating such an account. Sometimes people on IMDb made parody sock accounts, who took on a whole (obviously fake) persona, and were sometimes hilarious and never malicious in their intent. When the intention was obviously to antagonize someone else or just be an offensive asshat, that's a different story.
I would say that creating a new account to come back as someone totally new and pretend you aren't who you really are just so you don't have to deal with the baggage that came along with your previous account is definitely deceitful...and ultimately disrespectful to the people who thought you were their friend.
