LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The director of the first two "Mummy" movies is taking a swing at Tarzan.

Stephen Sommers is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to bring a new version of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs creation "Tarzan, Lord of the Apes," to the big screen.

Why is it that Hollywood has to beat ideas to death. I'm sure that some people will like this "new" version of Tarzan, but why can't they come up with more original ideas. It appears to me they feel the need to make the same movies over and over again: The Hulk, Batman, all the countless horror remakes, etc...

Thoughts?

Honestly? Because new ideas are untried, and the studios are too insecure with their money.

So instead of creating fresh new concepts, they beat the tried and true to death and beyond, because they know that historically they made money.

And sadly, history has a way of repeating itself.

Now if we could figure out a way to keep people from going to see/ rent all the new releases of remade movies? Well once they started to lose money then perhaps Hollywood would wake up and smell the rot their glut of remakes has caused.

I'm with you...I wish more people would boycott these unnecessary remakes. I don't think it will ever happen though.

I agree, jay. New hot young thing = good! :)

Because people keep going to see them.

As long as remakes earn a profit, studio execs will continue to produce them.

This goes for bad sequels too.

wasn't there a tarzan movie with casper van dien a few years back? as i recall it went over about as well as every other casper van dien movie.

yes, I believe there was. That's also one of the points I am trying to make. If it wasn't good the first hundred times, what is going to make this one so great.

yeah, but to be fair, maybe that's just because casper van dien was in it? let's be honest, starship troopers not withstanding, that dude is the kiss of death for just about any movie.

i just remembered that there was a tarzan movie with christopher lambert (who seems to have had a similar career to CVD) in the role. ian holm is in it, which makes me want to check it out.

Think that was Lord of Greystoke. Possibly the last decent Tarzan movie I've seen.

Actually, I thought the Disney version was decent. Although Greystoke isn't bad either.

Haven't seen it, but I'll take your word for it.
