I have noticed recently that we are getting more and more movies that jump or skip, and quite a few that won't play at all. It seems to be much worse than it was when we first joined. Has anyone else noticed this problem, or are we just lucky?

Thanks for the info. I'm going to Wally this afternoon to see what they have in the mid-low cheap range!

Good deal, I'm serious mid-level or cheap even is the way to go for rental discs and like Frank below me here says, I clean 'em before throwing them in there and I've just never had a problem. You get into expensive players and they might pick up everything that is wrong with the disc. I do think I got that Phillips player at Wally World but I'm not positive.

I try to clean every DVD before playing them... however. when I'm too lazy or I think the DVD looks clean enough they tend to stop, skip, etc. Cleaning them before hand, I have never had a problem.

How do you clean a DVD? Sounds like a duh, but it's a legit question!

Use a soft cloth, a dab of Windex and wipe from the center out, not around in circles. There are threads here discussing in more detail.

With a mild solution , wipe the discs with a soft cloth, OUT from the hole in the center.

I notice that when I DO get damaged or filthy/sticky discs, it's usually a family film or cheese horror,....meaning kids and young teens. Cleaning usually takes care of the matter, but sometimes when it just won't play, I try one of my other machines, and for some odd reason, it will sometimes play on one and not the other.
One is an all region, and the other a standard US region setting, but that doesn't seem to make a difference,...and you've got me as to why it does that,....lol...
Oh,...and beware of tiny cat and dog(as well as human) hairs on the discs,..if it gets in there while the gears are spinning, it can REALLY mess with your viewing, with skips and freezes, as well as be left in the machine to KEEP doing it.
It might be a nice suggestion that parents who rent films for their children be extra sure to check and clean the discs before sending them back.
Then there is the simple fact that some people in this world are selfish and careless. Are you old enough to remember coming in the room, and your room mate had all your rare LP's out of the sleeves and stacked atop one another while listening to them ? RAGE usually followed for me,...lol.....
Well,..those people are still around, and treat discs like cheap coasters, stacking and sliding them around and spilling stuff on them.
Also, always be sure to notify Netflix if a film is still skipping or freezing after trying to clean it, so they can remove it before another renter gets it.
I must admitt that sometimes, I forget to report them.
