I'll go do some research before I say too much more. But my first thought is to choek somebody. I get the bad feeling that someone will take a whizz upon my fond memory of this great film and the contributions of Ray Harryhausen.
Here's another of my favorites : Legend. For many reasons. The score, the effects, the fairy tell premise...and the smokin' hot Mia Sara in that naughty black dress.
I guess its ripe for a remake. I just hate to see a remake just for the sake of cashing in. In my personal opinion, it takes a director with conviction of purpose to make a worthwhile film. In the case of remakes, it is often a studio directive to make the film and it is put into the hands of someone to cut their teeth on. I can only hope that is not the case here.
The original had so many class actors and actresses. Meredith, Olivier, Ursula Andress. Just to name a few! I know the original myth was fudged for the film, but it was still a great story.
If it were me, I would do a "Clash of the Titans" version of Theseus and the Minutaur or something. Its the "other" Greek myth. They already remade Jason and the Argonauts too, now that I think of it. Or maybe "Ragnarok"...which is chok full of amazing setpieces and backstory to all the gods and their downfall.
Ah well, at least its something I should enjoy because of the subject matter. I won't poo-poo it too badly until I see something that offends me.
I thought it was OK. But my own memories of the original made it hard to really appreciate it...in fact, I have very few memories of the remake and many memories of the original.
I rather enjoyed THE ODYSSEY, though. No Harryhausen to compare it to! :)
I recently rented an animated movie called Dragonlance. It was a lot like Lord of the Rings only darker. I loved it, but most of the other reviewers didn't. I tried to write a counter review, but Netflix wouldn't post it.
bjm, are you aware of all the restricted words that Netflix won't allow in reviews? Netflix, for example, can't be in the review or it won't add. That and sometimes they take a while to show up.
I am a big fan of the Sword and Sorcery genre, and for me the holy trinity is Conan the Barbarian, the Beastmaster and the Sword and the Sorceror. And they are finally making the sequle to swor od the sorceror, Tales of the Ancient Empire, with Lee Horsely back as Talon, and Kevin Sorbo, Christopher Lambert and Yancy Butler as his Progeny. Cannot wait for that one.
Sword & the Sorcerer is on Netflix' "Save" list. So I haven't watched it in years and years. Cool that they are making a sequel. Man, its been a long time.
Wow, i would have loved to see Willow in a theater! I always forget to classify that movie as a fantasy movie. Kinda weird. And for favorites, well, there are so many sub classes of the sci fi fantasy genre it would be hard to pick one favorite. Willows up there, Legends, Reign of Fire, Conan, and LOTR.
Reign of Fire was awesome. I think that is the first movie I really saw where the dragons were really bad a**. Dragonslayer was all right, but maybe the new special effects they can do pushed Reign of Fire over the top.
