Update to netflix.com on May 9th - New Releases in the last Week/Month/etc.

There are a bunch of small changes, but the most visible one is that the slider based New Releases section has a few changes and a new row that shows movies that have released this week/month/etc. The "week" setting shows the same list of movies that the old RTW page showed, grouped by genre. The RTW page is still there as ever at the old URL.
If you are Blu-Ray enabled, the Blu-Ray new releases slider appears at the top of the page.

The Instant Watch "New Arrivals" section has also been updated to use sliders for New Movies, New TV and New in 'Genre' that you can select.

The Queue has been updated to show "now" in the availability column. Drag and drop has been reimplemented and also supports Safari now.

Movie recommendations have also been improved in several areas, should have better choices that make more sense.

I see the disclaimer "Due to high demand, some of these movies may have a wait time" which probably means Netflix is preparing for an onslaught of people adding new releases to their queues, which ultimately means fewer for everybody.

Hate to look a gift horse in the mouth and really appreciate that Netflix continues to advance and explore, but seems like there are only two solutions to the high demand for new release titles - 1)make it harder to find them, 2)throttle the distribution. Since they're now easier to find, I'm afraid we're getting ready to see New Release throttling on an unprecedented scale. Prepare for 5 new throttling threads in here per day.

Since I'm not a New Release junkie doesn't particularly affect me, and... I'm still going to keep my Netflix subscription!

By the way, do we think all the users who came in here and threatened to cancel their subscriptions when the RTW page went away, will come back and crow about how they're now going to keep it?

Haha! Maybe maybe Spindaddy! Since I'm not into the popular new releases and just certain genre new releases, I am hoping I won't get throttled on new horror movies. I may have gotten throttled for Teeth but I don't know. I had 2 returns in first thing by Monday a.m. and for some reason, they totally skipped my first movie which was Teeth and sent me something way lower on my queue. I guess I will see come Tuesday if I get those top 2 new releases I'm dying for! Again though, these are new releases of stuff that is not popular so my fingers are way crossed all weekend! *crosses toes too*

I'm extremely angry with this! If NF doesn't remove the New Releases section, I'm going to BB!

Aaah....the nostalgia.

LOL! Me too ... this sucks! :P Let's complain about how there's one less thing to complain about. :D

I wonder how many of the users really left because of the RTW page going away? I think it's more like when those celebrities said they'd leave the USA if Bush got elected in 2000.

Sweet! Lists can now be edited better in Firefox! The limit used to be around 200 then recently 260 (before you got the Error Sending Data message) but I justed tested 308 movies in a list and my changes saved. I do know it won't work in the 500s but I don't have anything higher than 308 to test further right now. (Internet Explorer always seems to choke at a movie limit about 1/2 to 2/3 the Firefox upper limit.) Thank you Netflix for gradually raising this limit! I am dividing several lists (catholic, evangelical, drama, comedy, foreign, classics) into smaller lists (a-m, n-z for the genres) but it's always nice to see improvements appear (esp. after requesting them)!

You say drag and drop has been reimplemented? Because starting late yesterday evening the performance really sucks. Now when I drag a movie there's a long delay before it will start moving. And when I drop it there's an even longer delay before it finally settles in. This happens in my large queue (500 films) and in a much smaller one (<200), so seems to be independent of queue size. It also happens on different computers and with different browsers (IE7 and Firefox).

I notice that there is no longer a residual different hand icon over items I've already moved. Was that a problem?

Here's hoping you'll take another look at this new implementation and do some heavy-duty performance testing.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. I have over 300 in my queue and its fast for me using Safari. Its been tested with all the main browsers and operating systems. Is anyone else having similar problems?

I'm not sure what you mean with items you have already moved, they don't seem any different to me.

I see the same delay with Safari, too. But I don't have a baseline for Firefox or Safari like I did with IE7. Drop used to be virtually instant; now it takes 0.5 - 1.0 seconds consistently.

I tried shutting down all other software on my system, including spyware/virus protection. Didn't seem to make any difference.

My other comment was about the cursor symbol. Since the reimplementation of drag & drop, it's always a pointing finger, so you're right--they're not any different now. Before the reimplementation, if I hovered over a movie I'd already dragged/dropped, it would change to a symbol that looked like a hand with only the knuckles showing. No big deal, but it was one way to see if I'd already moved a movie in that queue editing session.

Working flawlessly for me in Safari with a queue of 85, not even a slight delay.

The blurb "You have 175 Suggestions from 19437 ratings" is no longer on any page except the recommendation page. I liked having it appear on most pages. If it was causing a problem, I can live without it though.
