I'm wondering where to go with this post. Do you want us to comment on the article or the movie? Or just post our own examples? It would be helpful to know what you think about them.

Mine were examples of this, feel free to post your own.

IMHO a semi-biographical movie about a public personality isn't propaganda.

Flight 93

United 93

We will see, considering it is due to be released in October, it just seems suspicious, I reserve the right to change my opinion. ; )

Sorry I started this, just sort of took me aback. I figured the nature of this forum made it a good place.

Nah, I'm not trying to be combative. I'm actually kind of intrigued by the idea and now I'm trying to figure out what does qualify. I guess I just was thinking that if it's someone who was actively running, it probably would qualify (positive or negative), but if they are a lame duck..not so much.

There's pretty much been at least one movie about every president after they were out of office. Not to mention every movie with a historical reference has some spin. Hell, every history book was written by the winners, as they say.

Chronicles of Narnia qualifies as being Christian propaganda. It doesn't mean that the movies(or books) aren't engaging. It's just something to be aware of.

People think the Golden Compass is atheist propaganda, but it's FANTASY, and a great story, besides. And besides that, the author said in an interview that he didn't intend the books(this one plus two sequels) to promote atheism.

Very true. In fact, C. S. Lewis wrote a companion piece to The Chronicles of Narnia called Mere Christianity in which he stated that was his intent.

Ah The Golden Compass and other His Dark Materials books-- there's a wealth of fascinating thought contained there, that people not inclined to deep thought have woefully misconstrued. Pullman clarifies his "killing God" statement this way:

"My views on religion and science...That's a long one. In a sense I prefer just to point to the story and say "There it is." I'll say a brief word about the Authority, though. The God who dies is the God of the burners of heretics, the hangers of witches, the persecutors of Jews, the officials who recently flogged that poor girl in Nigeria who had the misfortune to become pregnant after having been forced to have sex - all these people claim to know with absolute certainty that their God wants them to do these things. Well, I take them at their word, and I say in response that that God deserves to die.

The Authority, then, is an ancient IDEA of God, kept alive artificially by those who benefit from his continued existence."

Quite a nuanced theological debate, hehe. Much easier to jump on the heresy bandwagon.
