Filmmaker Claude Chabrol stirs a boiling pot of lust and violence in this tense portrait of class struggle. Wealthy Frederique (Stephane Audran) meets Why, who's meandering around Paris, and takes her to glamorous St. Tropez. Frederique becomes her mentor, teaching Why how to maneuver in high society. But when Paul (Jean-Louis Trintignant) arrives, both of them fall for his charms, leaving one in love and the other rejected.

All the action (and non-action) of Claude Chabrol's cerebral and very abstract murder mystery takes place in the Perigord section of France. Chabrol's reel- and real-life muse, Stephane Audran, plays Helene, a teacher who falls in love with the mysterious Popaul. When women turn up murdered in her little town, however, she begins to suspect her new paramour.

The Gorilla

When wealthy insurance broker Walter Stevens (Bela Lugosi) receives a death threat from a rampaging murderer known only as 'the Gorilla' he hires a trio of private detectives (the Ritz brothers) for protection. When they arrive, the detectives question Stevens' servants. At midnight, Stevens suddenly disappears, and the trio of shamuses scour the house for him. The gorilla suddenly appears only to quickly vaporize, terrifying the guests even more.
