A (green) thumbs-up for this affecting true-life tale about hardened con Colin Briggs (Clive Owen), who gets a new lease on life -- behind prison bars -- as an award-winning gardener. Wonderful in support are David Kelly as a prisoner chum of Briggs's who coaxes him out of his shell and Helen Mirren as a world-class gardener who fears for her daughter when she falls for Briggs.

Cubicle worker Bob (Christian Slater) is a resentful outsider who's started carrying a gun in case he gets up the courage to use it on some of his co-workers. But when one of those co-workers starts shooting, Bob guns him down and becomes an inadvertent hero. Bob's newfound popularity makes him uncomfortable, even as he grows closer to Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert), who was badly wounded in the shooting. William H. Macy co-stars in this quirky drama.

Famed RKO Radio Pictures producer Val Lewton managed to single-handedly redefine the horror genre in the 1940s, cranking out low-budget, high-volume box office hits that rarely disappointed audiences -- or studio execs. This double feature of Cat People (1942) and The Curse of the Cat People (1944) -- Lewton's first film and its subsequent sequel starring Simone Simon -- is the first installment of a five-DVD collection of Lewton's work.

This has been going on for weeks now, and gawd knows how much unadvertised-as-such advertising this has generated for that film. It might be a good one; I just despise the sneaky stealth promotion and hope to discourage it in the future.
P.S. I left the Roku remote info on the original post, with a link for where to buy them online. $10 is pretty cheap, too.
